Alien Neighbors

Today on Far Future Horizons we go in search of our Alien Neighbors.

If we are not alone, who, or what else, is out there? Is anybody listening? ...
2042 AD. Powerful orbiting telescopes scour the heavens for signs of life. They focus on a dim yellow globe. Spectrum Analyzer results: negative. No oxygen, no life. The autotracker zooms in to another world, a pale blue dot. Oxygen signal: affirmative. And there appears to be water. This could be it!

Reading Is Indeed Fundamental

It has been said that reading is fundamental to a child’s education. In fact at least one philanthropic organization in the United States, Reading is Fundamental (RIF) is devoted to the mission of creating and fostering “a literate America in which all children have access to books and discover the joys and value of reading”.

Today on Far Future Horizons we present another exciting installment of the acclaimed BBC science documentary series Horizon, titled “Why Reading Matters” presented and narrated by science writer Rita Carter that offers scientific evidence that reading is indeed fundamental to a child’s education and is an activity which benefits all of us throughout our lives.

Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives

The quantum-mechanical "Schrödinger's cat" paradox according to the many-worlds interpretation. In this interpretation, every event is a branch point; the cat is both alive and dead, even before the box is opened, but the "alive" and "dead" cats are in different branches of the universe, both of which are equally real, but which do not interact with each other.

Today on Far Future Horizons we present the story of the “Many Worlds” interpretation of Quantum Mechanics and the physicist who developed it - Hugh Everett III as told by his rock star son Mark Everett and by Hugh’s close associates and colleagues.

Hugh Everett III

“Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives” tells the poignant story of a rock star in search of his father. Mark Oliver Everett, better known as E, is the lead singer of the cult US band the Eels. What most of his fans don’t know is that Mark’s father, Hugh Everett III, was one of America’s top quantum physicists.

What Darwin Didn't Know

Earth teems with a stunning diversity of living things. The source of this profusion of life was a profound mystery until Charles Darwin presented his revolutionary ideas on natural selection in his book “On the Origin of Species” on November 24th, 1859.

Natural selection has given rise to a plethora of living organisms each adapted and specialized to occupy a particular ecological niche and over time this process eventually led to the emergence of new species.

This portrait of Charles Darwin was painted by George Richmond in the late 1830s, around the time Darwin was fleshing out his theory of evolution.

But Darwin's radical insights raised as many questions as they answered. What actually drives evolution and turns one species into another? To what degree do different animals rely on the same genetic toolkit? And how did humans evolve?

The Oracle of Delphi

Oracle of Delphi

Today on Far Future Horizons we join archaeologists, geologists, chemists and toxicologists in unlocking the secrets of the the Oracle of Delphi.

Dating back to 1400 BC, the Oracle of Delphi was the most important shrine in all Greece, and in theory all Greeks respected its independence. Built around a sacred spring, Delphi was considered to be the omphalos - the center (literally navel) of the world.

People came from all over Greece and beyond to have their questions about the future answered by the Pythia, the priestess of Apollo. And her answers, usually cryptic, could determine the course of everything from when a farmer planted his seedlings, to when an empire declared war.

How to Survive A Robot Uprising

Is It Real? - Russian Bigfoot

Is it possible that prehistoric humans predating modern Homo sapiens still survive today? In Mongolia and Russia, rumours about hairy, ape-like creatures are the staple of gossip in the remote mountain communities of these relatively isolated countries . They are known as the "Almas" and Cryptozoologists claim they could be relic Neanderthals, that did not become extinct as once thought some thirty-five thousand years ago. Do relict hominids still walk the Earth?

The Mystery of the Neanderthal

Once upon a time in the history of our planet two distinct species of human walked the Earth together. Then some thirty five thousand years ago, in the ultimate contest of survival one species alone would survive to inherit the Earth – Homo sapiens. We are the descendants of the winners of that evolutionary contest.

Eventually we would spread out from the Old Worlds of Europe and Asia into the New Worlds of the Americas and Australia and became a planetary species. We discovered agriculture, built the first cities, developed culture and writing and became the pioneers of a totally new domain of evolution which is distinctly non-biological - Cultural Evolution. It is this new realm of evolution that has made us the most dominant life form on this planet and has set us on a trajectory that will one day take us out amongst the stars.

Exodus Earth ~ Mercury

Today on Far Future Horizons we join physicist Dr. Basil Singer in exploring the possibility of establishing a human outpost on Mercury, the most extreme planet in the solar system.

Exodus Earth ~ Mars

Mars is a world that holds a special mystique for humanity. We have been held under its captive spell for over a century. It is the one world where humanity expected to find life and sentience beyond the Earth. And, in the minds of many space visionaries today, Mars is the one world most likely to sever as a secondary planetary abode for terrestrial life and consciousness.

The colonization of Mars has been the topic of both romantic speculation and serious scientific study before the dawn of the Space Age. But, it has only been during the past forty years, beginning with observations of Mariner 9 and culminating with recent space missions of Mars Odyssey, Mars Express and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, that we can now assess the full resource potential of this world.
