He will cross the vast desert of the super continent of Pangaea Ultima in search of traces of humankind and its once great cities. But, with all humanity’s landmarks dissolved away his only hope is to find a fossilized city that has survived nature’s implacably powerful forces. Perhaps he can find New Orleans, which would have been buried under the Mississippi Delta. What will the evidence he finds reveal: further evolution, or the destruction of our species?

Are We Living Inside A Simulation?

Today on Far Future Horizons we ask the question: Are we living in a simulation? Is the totality of cosmic existence nothing more than a manufactured reality created inside some incredibly advanced super computer?

Personally I feel that simulation hypothesis, first formulated by Nick Bostrom (whose work in the field of existential risks I greatly admire), presented in this documentary is a very good example of pathologically bad science. I  think that in our attempts to stretch the limits of human knowledge to the breaking point, we are in fact being led down avenues of muddled headed thinking.  And, as a result, science fiction and fantasy are taking the place of real level-headed science.

Today on Far Future Horizons we present the second episode of the incredible three part BBC series hosted Stargazing Live by Brian Cox and Dara Ó Briain.

The aim of this series was to bring the Universe closer to our home.

In this episode, Liz shows us images of the sun, Brian explains how we know where every planet will be at a certain time, and Liz talks about blackouts from Coronal mass ejections (CMEs). We are also shown images of the Andromeda Galaxy, our nearest neighbour.
