Today on Far Future Horizons we present another exciting episode of the acclaimed documentary series “How the Universe Works”.
In
this installment we go in search of a new home for humanity out amongst the
stars – a Second Earth.
Is there another Earth out there with liquid oceans, rocky continents and life like us? Astronomers seek the answer with spectroscopy, direct imaging and telescopes. They hope to find evidence of atmospheres, magnetospheres and signs of life.
The
Earth is not alone. Over the past few years, astronomers have come to the
realization that our galaxy may be home to billions of exoplanets.
A comparison of Earth and Kepler-186f as a cold world with shallow oceans. |
Scientists
are scouring these exoplanets for evidence of atmospheres, liquid water, and
even life. In the program, expert astronomers discuss the latest technology in
the hunt for Earthlike planets, and reveal the conditions that need to exist to
make a planet habitable.
