What is Nothing?

Today on Far Future Horizons we present the fifth episode of the third season of Morgan Freeman’s Through the Wormhole which explores the nature of nothingness.

What is nothing? Is empty space really empty? Or is it filled with hidden forces? Scientists now regard understanding the true nature of empty space as the deepest and most baffling mystery they face: one that will explain where the universe came from, whether it is fated to expand into oblivion or whether it will undergo another dramatic transformation that could destroy everything we know.

Einstein showed us that empty space was really a force field that holds the entire universe together with gravity. Quantum Mechanics predicts that empty space is not actually empty. In every corner of the Universe there are tiny ripples of energy. Many physicists believe this energy is unstable. It might collapse, taking everything in the Universe down with it, or it could explode, with similarly devastating results.
