Today on Far Future Horizons we honor the 106th anniversary of Jacob Bronowski's birth by presenting the first episode of the acclaimed PBS series “The Ascent of Man” – Lower than the Angels” which discusses the evolution of man from proto-ape till the emergence of the first Homo sapiens.
Jacob Bronowski was a Polish-Jewish British mathematician, biologist, historian of science, theatre author, poet and inventor.
The Ascent of Man was a thirteen-part documentary television series produced by the BBC and Time-Life Films first transmitted in 1973, written and presented by Jacob Bronowski. Intended as a series of personal view documentaries in the manner of Kenneth Clark’s 1969 series Civilisation, the series received acclaim for Bronowski’s highly informed but eloquently simple analysis, his long unscripted monologues and its extensive location shoots.
The title alludes to The Descent of Man, the second book on evolution by Charles Darwin. Over the series’ thirteen episodes, Bronowski travelled around the world in order to trace the development of human society through its understanding of science. Just over a year after the series appeared, Bronowski died of a heart attack aged 66.
The entire series of The Ascent of Man and its companion book are available on DVD from Amazon.com.
