Ice World - A Tale of Human Survival

Today on Far Future Horizons we venture back in time some twenty-four thousand years to witness an epic tale of human survival during the last Ice Age.

We join a small band of ancient Europeans teetering on the brink of annihilation as they struggle with the most extreme living conditions anyone has ever faced, from encroaching sheets of ice that swallowed every bit of fertile land to a climate that was, on average, seventy degrees colder than it is today.

The Human Zoo Science's Dirty Secret

Today on Far Future Horizons we present a somewhat shocking and disturbing documentary concerning the early history of the science of Anthropology. The Human Zoo: Science's Dirty Secret, explores the disturbing phenomena of early 20th century human zoos.

Only one hundred years ago, many of the world's leading scientists agreed with A. C. Haddon, when he wrote in his 1898 book Study of Man, that, "on the whole, the white race has progressed beyond the black race."

Watching Desmond Morris

Today on Far Future Horizons it gives me great pleasure to present the documentary “Watching Desmond Morris” hosted by Sir David Attenborough.

Desmond Morris has been watching us for nearly fifty years, applying his skills as a zoologist to human beings as if they were just another animal.

Books such as "The Naked Ape" and "Manwatching" made him a household name. Now it is time to turn the tables and ask him a few questions.

With contributions from experts such as Richard Dawkins and Oliver James, and from Morris's old friend Sir David Attenborough, we ask how credible Morris's observations, and the conclusions, really were, and whether there is still anything to learn from studying humans in the way the he did.

Is There a Superior Race?

Today on Far Future Horizons we present Morgan Freeman’s Through the Wormhole and explore the contentious and polarizing questions of racial differences and racial superiority.

What are the biological differences between different races? Genetic anthropologists have discovered that up to 7 percent of our genes have mutated to new forms in the past 50,000 years. These changes are not just related to skin and eye colour, but also to our bones, our digestive systems, and even our brains. Some of these genetic mutations are specific to certain racial groups.

Jared Diamond’s Guns Germs and Steel

Why has Western European Civilization become the most dominant culture on Earth? And, will the entire planet and Western Civilization with it become victims of that success? Today on Far Future Horizons we present Jared Diamond’s Guns Germs and Steel.

This documentary is based on Jared Diamond’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same name, Guns, Germs and Steel and traces humanity’s journey over the last 13,000 years from the dawn of farming at the end of the last Ice Age to the realities of life in the twenty-first century. Inspired by a question put to him on the island of Papua New Guinea more than thirty years ago, Diamond embarks on a world-wide quest to understand the roots of global inequality.
