An Evening with Jules Verne

Today on Far Future Horizons we would like to offer our dear and faithful readers an Evening with Jules Verne.

Our two video features for today are two Vernian movie classics: Walt Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) and the Mysterious Island (1961) produced by Charles H. Schneer and the legendary special effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen.

Among Ray Harryhausen’s most notable works are his animation on Mighty Joe Young (with pioneer Willis O'Brien, which won the Academy Award for special effects) (1949), The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (his first colour film) and Jason and the Argonauts, featuring a famous sword fight against seven skeleton warriors.

Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello

Today on Far Future Horizons we present a short Australian animated film inspired by the fantasy writings of Edgar Alan Poe and the science fiction of Jules Verne.

The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello is a series of short animated films  set in a world styled after mid-Victorian England with Steampunk style, iron dirigibles and steam powered computers, where giant mechanical airships are the main mode of transport. The characters are animated in the style of Wayang (Indonesian shadow puppets) best described as silhouettes. The visual style of the characters is similar to that used by the 1926 film The Adventures of Prince Achmed (one of the oldest-surviving animated feature films).

Journey to the Center of the Earth

Today on Far Future Horizons we delve into the fantasy and amazing accuracy of Jules Verne's classic novel and discover what it will take for humanity to conquer the final frontier – the center of the earth. This documentary first aired on the Discovery Channel in 2003.

Man has always been fascinated with the soil beneath his feet, but just how far beneath the earth's crust have we gone? Miners reveal some of the deepest mines ever constructed, while naval engineers demonstrate a deep-sea submersible capable of going 22,000 feet below the surface. In the lab, civil engineers talk of adapting NASA technology to develop a super-drill that could reach the center of the earth. And, scientists explain that there is in fact life very near the earth's molten core – just as Verne predicted.
