Titan, a sense of déjà vu?

Today on Far Future Horizons we focus our sights on Saturn’s mysterious and mesmerizing moon Titan. Titan is a moon shrouded in a thick orange red atmosphere which, like the planet Venus, hides its surface from the gaze of terrestrial astronomers. To paraphrase the great Winston Churchill, Titan was a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. And, our puzzlement over Titan only deepened when we pierce its veil and obtained our very first pictures of its surface.

So much so, and quoting directly from an upcoming article in Scientific American titled “The Moon That Would Be a Planet”:

“….. On the morning of January 14, 2005, at the European Space Operations Center in Darmstadt, Germany, the pictures caused jubilation and puzzlement in equal measure. None of us expected the landscape to look so Earth-like.

As Huygens parachuted down, its aerial pictures showed branching river channels cut by rain-fed streams. It landed on the damp, pebble-covered site of a recent flash flood. What was alien about Titan was its eerie familiarity”.

And, it is this sense of déjà vu that prompts us to ask the question is Titan, A Place Like Home?

The 'Satellite Planets' of the Solar System and Beyond

Satellite Planet© David A. Hardy

Today on Far Future Horizons we present another installment of the awe inspiring documentary series “The Universe” and take a journey to the other natural satellites of our solar system and beyond.

The natural satellites of the major planets in our solar system come in many shapes and sizes. Each is a world unique and beautiful in its own right. Home to incredible natural phenomena like gigantic geysers and colossal volcanoes, moons also offer perhaps the best chance of finding alien life in the Universe – and they probably exist in the billions.

In fact a recent article on Discovery News asked the question: Should Large Moons Be Called 'Satellite Planets'? The term ‘Satellite Planet’ was coined by the principal investigator on NASA's New Horizons mission to Pluto  Alan Stern.

Universe: Beyond the Millennium ~ Alien Life

“At the start of a new millennium we're about to embark on the greatest adventure of all time. Five hundred million miles from Earth, a spacecraft will land on Jupiter's icy moon, Europa. It's mission, to search for alien life. As we reach out across the galaxy, our spacecraft will explore the most extreme environments to answer the ultimate question, are we alone?” ~ John Hurt, The Expanding Universe: Searching for Other Life Forms.

Today on Far Future Calling we join the search for Alien Life in this episode from the acclaimed documentary series "Universe: Beyond the Millennium” narrated by John Hurt.

Humankind has pondered since time immemorial whether or not we are alone in the Universe. Only within the last century or so has the technology come into existence that would allow for the serious scientific search for such extraterrestrials.

This documentary details some of the discoveries that have been made thus far that might suggest the possibility of extraterrestrial life, as well as the continuing efforts of scientists to make new discoveries along those lines.

Moons of the Solar System

Today on Far Future Horizons we present a fabulous documentary produced by Britain’s Open University concerning the natural satellites of our solar system. Join us as we take an exciting voyage to some of the most exotic moons in our solar system; each a unique and beautiful world in its own right.

How did the solar system form? Are we alone in the Universe? What are alien atmospheres made of? These questions can be answered by studying the solar system’s vast family of satellites.

This collection of videos looks at five of the most intriguing worlds that we’ve managed to visit over the last fifty years, including The Moon, Europa, Phobos, Deimos and Titan.

From the first human footsteps on another world to the most distant spacecraft landing in history, our neighbourhood of moons has always played a central role in our exploration of the planets.
