Cosmic Odyssey – Stellar Evolution

Each of us, in the immortal words of the American poet Walt Whitman, “…are the journeywork of the stars, no less than the leaves of grass." As Carl Sagan would put it later in the twentieth century – “Our lives, our past and our future are tied to the sun, the moon and the stars… We humans have seen the atoms which constitute all of nature and the forces that sculpted this work… and we, who embody the local eyes and ears and thoughts and feelings of the cosmos, have begun to wonder about our origins… star stuff contemplating the stars, organized collections of ten billion billion billion atoms, contemplating the evolution of nature, tracing that long path by which it arrived at consciousness here on the planet earth… Our loyalties are to the species and to the planet. Our obligation to survive and flourish is owed not just to ourselves but also to that cosmos ancient and vast from which we spring”.

Today on Far Future we trace this stellar legacy. We present an episode of Cosmic Odyssey narrated by the veteran actor William Shatner.

The Universe ~ The Search for Cosmic Clusters

The Pleiades star cluster (which is an example of an open cluster)
Today on Far Future Horizons we present another exciting episode of the acclaimed History Channel series The Universe, concerning the Search for Cosmic Clusters.

Cosmic clusters are the one-stop-shopping places for learning all about the nature, variety and evolution of stars in the Universe.
A Globular Cluster

They are unique, because in clusters, all the stars were born at about the same time, from the same material and all are at the same approximate distance from Earth. This means we can be sure that any differences among them are due to their true natures and not distorted by different distances from Earth and other factors.

Something the Sun was not supposed to do until five billion years from now when it exhausts all its hydrogen fuel in its core and leaves the Main Sequence stage of its life.

The current size of the Sun (now in the main sequence) compared to its estimated maximum size during its red-giant phase in the future
