Supervolcanoes

Today on Far Future Horizons we will focus our attention on perhaps the least understood and the most destructive natural phenomena on Earth – Supervolcanoes.

Map of all Known Supervolcanoes

Only a handful exist in the world but, when one erupts it will be unlike any volcano we have ever witnessed. The explosion will be heard around the world. The sky will darken, black rain will fall, and the Earth will be plunged into the equivalent of a nuclear winter.

George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

"He gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark mustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother" ~ George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty Four (1984)

With all the news wires abuzz over the past year and a half about the revelations concerning domestic spying in the United Kingdom and the United States  by Edward Snowden, the former technical contractor for the United States National Security Agency (NSA) and a former employee of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) we at Far Future Horizons thought it only fitting that we present the most recent film adaptation of George Orwell’s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984). The novel and film  illustrate the full magnitude of how our civil rights as citizens may eventually become eroded.

Snowden leaked details of top-secret U.S. and British government mass surveillance programs such as PRISM to the press. Has the Orwellian vision of the surveillance society become a reality?

Horizon - We Are the Aliens

Today on Far Future Horizons we look at the exciting possibility that terrestrial life may have had an extraterrestrial origin and that the Earth in its infancy was seeded by microbes from outer space through a process known as Panspermia.

Clouds of alien life forms are sweeping through outer space and infecting planets with life – it may not be as far-fetched as it sounds and may explain the origin of life on Earth if not the origin of life itself.

The New Time Lords

Is time travel possible? And if it were what will this reveal to us about the fundamental nature of reality? Will our forays into the fourth dimension reveal to us that all of cosmic existence is in fact virtual and that we are nothing more than mere virtual players in a highly advanced computer simulation? Will our attempts at becoming the New Time Lords only reveal to us that in fact we are mere pawns in a highly sophisticated arcade game?

According to the BBC documentary Horizon-“Time Trip” such possibilities are very real.

Living in Parallel Universes

Today on Far Future Horizons we once again explore the possible existence of universes parallel to our own.

X-Day: The Plan to Invade Japan

Today on Far Future Horizons we mark the seventieth anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by taking another foray through an Alternate History of the Second World War with “X-Day: The Plan to Invade Japan”.

Let us suppose that the Trinity Test at Alamogordo, New Mexico had gone very badly and the Manhattan project, that involved the efforts of 130,000 people and cost nearly US$ 2 billion ($ 22 billion in present day value), rather than detonating the world’s first atomic bomb, had in fact produce a dud.

The show's setting is a huge generational colony spacecraft called The Ark, which has gone off-course. Many of the descendants of the original crew and colonists are unaware, however, that they are aboard a ship.

Earth II (1971)

Welcome to the first independent nation in Earth Orbit. Welcome to Earth II.

Today on Far Future Horizons it gives me great pleasure to present the TV motion picture Earth II starring Gary Lockwood of “2001: A Space Odyssey” fame.

I saw this motion picture when it first aired on NBC Channel 4 in New York City. I was ten years old at the time. This is the very first motion picture I ever saw that depicted the concept of an orbital space colony. Later made famous by Gerald K. O’Neill.

Towards 3001 and Beyond with Arthur C Clarke – Master of the Infinite

Arthur C Clarke departed our world and went on his own personal and final odyssey into the infinite on March 19th, 2008. Through his creative brilliance in the genres of science fiction and popular science, both in the printed word and the mass media of television and motion pictures, Clarke more than any other futurist of his generation has taught three generations of men and women that our exploratory endeavors into the depths of unknown and the inevitable discoveries and terrors that await us could also be the greatest moments of transcendence in human history.
