This fabulous photograph shows Neil Armstrong’s face through his space suit visor as he walks across the lunar surface. The image was captured in video footage by the movie camera mounted on the Eagle lunar lander. The image was retrieved by Spacecraft Films, an Ohio-based specialist in historical space footage, and was included in the newly published book, Voices from the Moon, by author Andrew Chaikin. From the Earth To The Moon - 1968



This photo of "Earthrise" over the lunar horizon was taken by the Apollo 8 crew in December 1968, showing Earth for the first time as it appears from deep space. 

Astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and William Anders had become the first humans to leave Earth orbit, entering lunar orbit on Christmas Eve. In a historic live broadcast that night, the crew took turns reading from the Book of Genesis, closing with a holiday wish from Commander Borman: "We close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you -- all of you on the good Earth."

Largely based on Andrew Chaikin's book, A Man on the Moon, the series is known for its accurate telling of the story of Apollo and outstanding special effects.

The End of the Line -The World Without Fish


Today on Far Future Horizons we present the documentary “The End of the Line: The World Without Fish”.


The End of the Line, the first major feature documentary film revealing the impact of overfishing on our oceans, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition. Sundance took place in Park City, Utah, January 15-25, 2009.

Scientists predict that if we continue fishing as we are now, we will see the end of most seafood by 2048.

Deepest Dive - The Story of the Trieste





Over fifty years ago, two men attempted to reach the deepest part of the ocean, 10,911 metres (35,797 ft) down in the South Pacific. This is the tale of the Trieste vessel and their feat that has never been equalled.

It was a seven-mile voyage to the deepest part of the ocean, and there were only two men in the world right for the job.

Historians have long speculated that thousands of wooden ships plied a Maritime Silk Route from the Middle East to China, braving long distances on white-capped seas, but time and the deep ocean have destroyed any evidence . . . until now. In 1998 German engineer Tilman Walterfang found a shipwreck from the Ninth Century blanketed by intact gold, silver and ceramic items. As we uncover clues and reveal the story of the wreck, re-enactments transport us back in time to an age of the legendary Sinbad the Sailor, when vicious seas ravaged wooden boats like matchsticks.
