Everything and Nothing

Today on Far Future Horizons we present a two-part BBC documentary entitled “Everything and Nothing” which essentially deals with two of the deepest and perplexing questions confronting science today – what is everything, and what is nothing?

In these two epic, surreal and mind-expanding episodes, Professor Jim Al-Khalili searches for an answer to these questions as he explores the true size and shape of the universe and delves into the amazing science behind apparent nothingness.
The first part, “Everything”, we set out with Professor Al-Khalili to discover what the universe might actually look like. The journey takes him from the distant past to the boundaries of the known universe.

How Does the Universe Work?

Our universe. It’s awe-inspiring, and baffling. From colossal explosions of stars, to the strange movements of tiny particles, each new discovery seems to uncover a new layer of mystery. Our understanding of the world around us has taken us from the Stone Age to the Silicon Age. Now, ironclad laws of physics are breaking apart. What we believe of reality may not be real at all. The future of humanity depends on our discovering how the universe really works. ~ Morgan Freeman, Through the Wormhole, How Does the Universe Work?

Since the ancient Greeks first speculated that everything they observed in reality was the result of the interaction of tiny particles they called atoms, great thinkers have tried to find a single mathematical formula that governs and explains the workings of the entire universe. So far, though, even minds as brilliant as physicists Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking have been unable to come up with that single grand equation of everything, also known as the theory of everything, or the final theory. Nevertheless, they continue to try, because without that final piece of the puzzle that is reality, the sum total of what we know falls a bit short of making sense.

Today on Far Future Horizons we join host Morgan Freeman on a quest to answer the question – How does the Universe work?

Living in Parallel Universes

Today on Far Future Horizons we once again explore the possible existence of universes parallel to our own.

Parallel universes are strange hidden worlds, where an alternative reality exists and have been the subject of many a science fiction novel for decades.

Parallel universes sound like a myth and downright fantasy, but a surprising number of leading scientists believe they are real.

Uncertain Principles - The Triumph of Quantum Physics

Today on Far Future Horizons we present for your viewing pleasure the BBC documentary “Uncertain Principles” which explorers the historical development of Quantum Mechanics as a new field in physics. Quantum physics led to a major paradigm shift regarding the nature of reality and the Cosmos in which we live.

This documentary explores the emergence of Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle in the early 20th century, and how its implications shook up the scientific establishment of the day.

What Is Reality?

Today on Far Future Horizons we explore the fundamental nature of reality that underlies our existence with acclaimed BBC science series Horizon – What is reality?

There is a strange and mysterious world that surrounds us, a world largely hidden from our senses. The quest to explain the true nature of reality is one of the great scientific detective stories.

Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives

The quantum-mechanical "Schrödinger's cat" paradox according to the many-worlds interpretation. In this interpretation, every event is a branch point; the cat is both alive and dead, even before the box is opened, but the "alive" and "dead" cats are in different branches of the universe, both of which are equally real, but which do not interact with each other.

Today on Far Future Horizons we present the story of the “Many Worlds” interpretation of Quantum Mechanics and the physicist who developed it - Hugh Everett III as told by his rock star son Mark Everett and by Hugh’s close associates and colleagues.

Hugh Everett III

“Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives” tells the poignant story of a rock star in search of his father. Mark Oliver Everett, better known as E, is the lead singer of the cult US band the Eels. What most of his fans don’t know is that Mark’s father, Hugh Everett III, was one of America’s top quantum physicists.
