How Does the Universe Work?

Our universe. It’s awe-inspiring, and baffling. From colossal explosions of stars, to the strange movements of tiny particles, each new discovery seems to uncover a new layer of mystery. Our understanding of the world around us has taken us from the Stone Age to the Silicon Age. Now, ironclad laws of physics are breaking apart. What we believe of reality may not be real at all. The future of humanity depends on our discovering how the universe really works. ~ Morgan Freeman, Through the Wormhole, How Does the Universe Work?

Since the ancient Greeks first speculated that everything they observed in reality was the result of the interaction of tiny particles they called atoms, great thinkers have tried to find a single mathematical formula that governs and explains the workings of the entire universe. So far, though, even minds as brilliant as physicists Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking have been unable to come up with that single grand equation of everything, also known as the theory of everything, or the final theory. Nevertheless, they continue to try, because without that final piece of the puzzle that is reality, the sum total of what we know falls a bit short of making sense.

Today on Far Future Horizons we join host Morgan Freeman on a quest to answer the question – How does the Universe work?

Einstein’s Biggest Blunder

In 1917, Albert Einstein inserted a term called the cosmological constant into his theory of general relativity to force the equations to predict a stationary universe in keeping with physicists' thinking at the time.

Today on Far Future Horizons we present two video features that explore Einstein's "biggest blunder".

Travelling Through Time

Time travel has been the staple of science fiction novels, television programs and major motion ever since H.G. Wells first penned his classic prototypical scientific romance "The Time Machine" in 1895.

The Fabric of the Cosmos Episode 2

Today on Far Future Horizons it gives us great pleasure to present the second episode, of Dr. Brian Greene’s acclaimed NOVA documentary series "The Fabric of the Cosmos" that explores the nature of time.

Can We Travel Faster Than Light?

Light speed is called the ultimate speed limit of the universe and humanity will always remain confined to the solar system because of it, leaving other star systems and other galaxies forever beyond our reach. Unless, that is we can break the light barrier or circumvent the laws of relativistic physics and find short cuts in the fabric of space-time in the form of White Holes and Wormholes. These are the cosmic gateways that theoretically can zip you across vast distances in the twinkle of an eye or take you on voyages to parallel universes and on journeys across vast eons of time.

The Fabric of the Cosmos Episode 1

Today on Far Future Horizons it gives us great pleasure to present the first episode, of Dr. Brian Greene’s acclaimed documentary series The Fabric of the Cosmos.

The Fabric of the Cosmos, is a four-hour NOVA series based on the book by renowned physicist and author Brian Greene, which takes us to the frontiers of physics to see how scientists are piecing together the most complete picture yet of space, time, and the universe. With each step, audiences will discover that just beneath the surface of our everyday experience lies a world we’d hardly recognize—a startling world far stranger and more wondrous than anyone expected.

Brian Greene is going to let you in on a secret: We've all been deceived. Our perceptions of time and space have led us astray. Much of what we thought we knew about our universe—that the past has already happened and the future is yet to be, that space is just an empty void, that our universe is the only universe that exists—just might be wrong.

Interweaving provocative theories, experiments, and stories with crystal-clear explanations and imaginative metaphors like those that defined the groundbreaking and highly acclaimed series "The Elegant Universe," "The Fabric of the Cosmos" aims to be the most compelling, visual, and comprehensive picture of modern physics ever seen on television.

The History Channel's – Einstein

Today on Far Future Horizons we present a recent documentary that appeared on the History Channel concerning Albert Einstein.

It presents the extraordinary and remarkable story of Albert Einstein and his decades long battle to prove his  General theory of Relativity amid the violence of the First World War and the tumultuous events of his personal life.

In 1907, Einstein challenged two centuries of scientific belief and Sir Isaac Newton with a mind-boggling theory: Gravity is not pulling you down. Instead, massive bodies like the Sun and the Earth are bending space and time around you, pushing you down. He then had to prove his theory to unconvinced scientists. He figured that light from a distant star, as it passes right next to the sun and the sun’s gravitational field, will be bent. And the only way to see that would be to photograph a total solar eclipse.

Black Holes - The Ultimate Abyss

Today on Far Future Horizons with the help of astronomers, astrophysicists and computer animators we are going to embark on an odyssey into the ultimate gravitational abyss of the Cosmos - the black hole, in which matter is crushed into a pinpoint of infinite density and smallness and from which not even light can escape.

Garrett P. Serviss’ The Einstein Theory of Relativity

Today on Far Future Horizons we are proud to present a 1923 silent animated motion picture based on Garrett P. Serviss’ popularization of Albert Einstein’s theories of relativity - The Einstein Theory of Relativity published in 1923.

The Einstein Theory of Relativity is a 20 minute silent black and white animated film. It was produced in 1923 by the Fleischer Studios, best known for their Betty Boop cartoons.

This film was produced in collaboration with popular science journalist and science fiction author Garrett P. Serviss to accompany his book on the same topic.

Serviss was the author of Edison's Conquest of Mars (1898), written on commission from The Boston Post as a sequel to "Fighters from Mars", an un-authorized and heavily altered version of H. G. Wells’ War of the Worlds.

E = mc2: A Biography of the World's Most Famous Equation

Albert Einstein's name will forever be linked with the famous equation E=mc2 equating mass with energy. It is perhaps one of the most quoted and widely seen physics equations in the public domain.

Yet contained in this short and concise equation is the heritage and ultimate destiny of our species. This equation expresses succinctly the process by which all the matter found in stars, planets, galaxies and people came into being. This equation expresses the very essence of cosmic history in a very brief and yet poetic phrase. For contained in this equation is the very essence of cosmic history and how in the span of fourteen billion years energy evolved into matter and matter evolved into life and consciousness.

Time Travel - The Truth

The Principle Behind Dr. Ronald Mallett’s Time Machine

Is time travel possible? It was long relegated to the realm of science fiction, but some scientists now believe that time travel is not only possible but inevitable.

Albert Einstein redefined our understanding about the nature of gravity and showed us we inhabit a universe in which the very fabric of space-time is malleable and can be warped by any object with mass. But, what happens when space-time is not only warped but twisted? And, could this be done with the help of a laser beam?
