Invaders from Mars and Beyond

The Martians are Coming!!! The Martians are Coming!!!

Today marks the seventy-eighth anniversary of Orson Welles’ infamous 1938 Radio broadcast that panicked America. In order to commemorate this anniversary, and wish our dear readers a Happy Halloween, we would like to offer you a very unique triple treat of panic and mayhem.

Our first treat for you today the movie titled "The Night That Panicked America" an American made-for-television movie that was originally broadcast on the ABC network on October 31, 1975. The movie dramatizes events surrounding Orson Welles’ infamous War of the Worlds radio broadcast (based on the novel of the same name by English author H.G. Wells) of October 30, 1938, which had led some people to believe that an invasion of Martians was actually happening in Grover's Mill, New Jersey.

Our second and third video features for today are two documentaries that recently aired which take a scientific look at the possible motivations behind an alien invasion of our world and how humanity may hope to defend itself.

The War of the Worlds and Beyond

No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable. It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days. At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. And early in the twentieth century came the great disillusionment.               ~ H.G Wells, The War of the Worlds (1898)

Thus began H.G. Wells’ legendary novel of the Martian assault of planet Earth. This novel started a whole genre of alien invasion literature that has been one of the mainstays of science fiction ever since.

A Twenty- First Century War of the Worlds

No one would have believed, in the second decade of the twenty-first century that human affairs were being watched across the timeless void of interstellar space. No one could have dreamed that humanity and Earth’s biosphere were being scrutinized as someone with a microscope studies the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.

Few people, as they went about their humdrum affairs, even considered the possibility of life on other planets or the possibility that extraterrestrial intelligence had any interest in our blue abode of life. And yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this Earth with envious eyes, and slowly, and surely, they drew their plans against us. Yet, fortunately a few farsighted people, amongst our number, anticipated this eventuality and drew plans of their own.

Today on Far Future Horizons we present When Aliens Attack.
