Can We Survive the Death of the Sun?

Today on Far Future Horizons we join veteran actor Morgan Freeman in an outstanding episode of the acclaimed Science Channel documentary series “Through the Wormhole” which explores the question - Can We Survive the Death of the Sun?

The focus of this installment of Through the Wormhole is the survival of humanity (or whatever  we evolve to become) into the far distant future, as measured on geological and cosmological timescales, by developing the technology to move to another planet, a new "Earth" or star system in order to survive the death of our central star, The Sun.

Sci-Fi Science – Shape shifting Transformer

Today on Far Future Horizons we join Dr Michio Kaku for another exciting installment of Sci Fi Science. According to Hollywood, evil robots are all around us, disguised as cars and trucks. But what the movies don't explain is what kind of mechanical power allows a Chevrolet Camaro to stand up and move around like a human. Dr. Michio Kaku is on a quest to build a real life shape shifting Transformer robot.

Cheating with Michio Kaku - Mysteries of The Universe

Today Far Future Horizons we will be Cheating with Michio Kaku.

Suppose you are out with a group of friends gazing at the night sky and someone says, did you know that they just found a black hole at the center of our galaxy and someone else mentions dark matter or the whole universe was smaller then an atom the instant before the big bang..

How to Explore the Universe in Style

Will such futuristic technologies as depicted in our favourite science fiction television shows ever become a real possibility?

Today on Far Future Horizons we join physicist Michio Kaku as he designs and unveils his plan for a way to explore the universe in style.

The key to its design is that staple of any great space adventure series - the warp drive. As any Star Trek fan knows the warp drive is the common name for various types of faster-than-light spacecraft propulsion systems, both fictional and hypothetical.

Sci-Fi Science ~ Holodeck

Today on Far Future Horizons we join Dr. Michio Kaku for another exciting episode of his acclaimed television series “Sci-Fi Science: Physics of the Impossible”.

In this episode, professor Kaku is on a mission to use technology to create an imaginary world indistinguishable from the real thing. Can we use our current knowledge of physics to create the technology that will one day make possible, one of the greatest inventions to emerge from the collective imagination of science fiction, - Star Trek's Holodeck?

Creating a New Solar System

Today on Far Future Horizons we join Dr. Michio Kaku as he embarks on his most ambitious plan to date – the creation of a new solar system tailored made for humanity’s long term survival.

Dyson sphere

In this installment of Sci Fi Science, Dr. Michio Kaku meets extra solar planet hunter Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institution who identifies 47 Ursae Majoris as our nearest suitable star as the site for this massive astro-engineering enterprise.

Interior View of a Dyson-sphere

But with no Earth like planets in orbit around 47 Ursae Majoris, it surely does not feel anything close to home. Gravity could be used to manipulate a moon into an Earth like position. But Dr. Kaku's thinking bigger than that. If he's building a whole new solar system for humanity, surely he should be able to harness the entire power output of our new sun. So he comes up with an incredible plan to completely encircle the sun with his own version of a Dyson sphere, which will act as a huge energy collector. What's more, once it starts spinning we'll be able to settle on the inside and become a truly stellar civilization.

Building a Flying Saucer

How does one go about building a real bonafide flying saucer? Is such a feat possible when so many other professional and amateur engineers have failed? An article I stumbled upon recently has inspired me to look at what scientists and engineers have to say about actually building this fascinating futuristic technology.

Sci Fi Science - Designing a Lightsaber

Today on Far Future Horizons we are going to look at the possibility of designing a working light-saber. The lightsaber, as every science fiction fan knows, is a weapon which has a key role in the Star Wars movies and the franchise's expanded universe.

The lightsaber consists of a polished metal hilt which projects a blade of energy about one meter long. The lightsaber is the signature weapon of the Jedi order and their Sith counterparts, both of whom can use them for offence, or to deflect blaster bolts. In today’s episode of Sci Fi Science, Dr. Michio Kaku reveals how we could one day build a light saber using the knowledge of twenty-first century physics and engineering.

The first and second seasons of Sci Fi Science, hosted by Dr. Michio Kaku is a available on DVD from the Discovery Channel’s online store.
