The Universe ~ The Search for Cosmic Clusters

The Pleiades star cluster (which is an example of an open cluster)
Today on Far Future Horizons we present another exciting episode of the acclaimed History Channel series The Universe, concerning the Search for Cosmic Clusters.

Cosmic clusters are the one-stop-shopping places for learning all about the nature, variety and evolution of stars in the Universe.
A Globular Cluster

They are unique, because in clusters, all the stars were born at about the same time, from the same material and all are at the same approximate distance from Earth. This means we can be sure that any differences among them are due to their true natures and not distorted by different distances from Earth and other factors.

Titan, a sense of déjà vu?

Today on Far Future Horizons we focus our sights on Saturn’s mysterious and mesmerizing moon Titan. Titan is a moon shrouded in a thick orange red atmosphere which, like the planet Venus, hides its surface from the gaze of terrestrial astronomers. To paraphrase the great Winston Churchill, Titan was a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. And, our puzzlement over Titan only deepened when we pierce its veil and obtained our very first pictures of its surface.

So much so, and quoting directly from an upcoming article in Scientific American titled “The Moon That Would Be a Planet”:

“….. On the morning of January 14, 2005, at the European Space Operations Center in Darmstadt, Germany, the pictures caused jubilation and puzzlement in equal measure. None of us expected the landscape to look so Earth-like.

As Huygens parachuted down, its aerial pictures showed branching river channels cut by rain-fed streams. It landed on the damp, pebble-covered site of a recent flash flood. What was alien about Titan was its eerie familiarity”.

And, it is this sense of déjà vu that prompts us to ask the question is Titan, A Place Like Home?

Aftermath - When the Earth Stops Spinning

Today on Far Future Horizons we explore the dire consequences if the Earth were to gradually stop spinning on its axis.

In this catastrophic scenario the spin of the Earth starts slowing down dramatically and is estimated Earth would stop spinning in as little as five years. The first effect is the isolation between the Global Positioning System satellites and ground-based atomic clocks. Then the all-day, all-night stock markets crash because the day is longer than 24 hours.

Over billions of years, our planet has developed into an intricate ecosystem, capable of sustaining life. But what would the outcome be if we were confronted by scenarios of apocalyptic proportions? Aftermath examines how we would cope in the event of various natural and man-made happenings on an epic scale. Imagining extreme scenarios, this four-part series looks at how the entire world would prepare for the end of time.

The Secrets of the Star Disk

Today on Far Future Horizons we present the extraordinary story of how a small metal disc is rewriting the epic saga of how civilization first came to Europe, 3600 years ago.

When grave robbers ransacked a Bronze Age tomb in Germany, they had no idea that they had unearthed the find of a lifetime. But they knew that it was worth selling. It was a small bronze disc of exquisite design. So they contacted the archaeologist Harald Meller, offering to sell it to him for £300,000.

Meller went deep into the criminal underworld and, after a police sting, he got his disc. It depicted the sun, the moon and the stars. This suggested an understanding of the heavens greater than that of the first great civilizations, like Egypt. Could it possibly be real?

Finding a way to travel backwards requires breaking the speed of light, which so far seems impossible. But now, strange-but-true phenomena such as quantum nonlocality, where particles instantly teleport across vast distances, may give us a way to make the dream of traveling back and forth through time a reality.
